Finding Your Elizabeth: A Safe Place in Life’s Hard Seasons

Life can feel overwhelming sometimes, especially when you’re navigating big changes or challenges. In those moments, one of the most important things you can do is find someone who makes you feel understood—a person who offers support, encouragement, and a safe place to just be.

For me, that person has often been my friend Nancy. We’ve been friends for over 30 years, and every time we talk, I walk away feeling like my cup is overflowing. I leave filled with life and hope. It doesn’t matter what’s happening—whether I’m celebrating something exciting or struggling through something heavy—Nancy knows how to show up in just the right way. And let me tell you, when we laugh, we laugh (one time we laughed so hard we had to share a rescue inhaler!). There’s something about those conversations that feels like a deep breath of fresh air.

Nancy is my Elizabeth.

If you know the story of Mary and Elizabeth, you’ll understand what I mean. When Mary found out she was pregnant (with like the savior of the world… holy moly!), she didn’t tell everyone right away. Instead, she went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was also experiencing her own miraculous pregnancy. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for a while—long enough to find a safe place to process everything, gain encouragement, and prepare for what was ahead.

Elizabeth didn’t just offer her a home; she offered her heart. She celebrated with Mary, encouraged her, and reminded her that she wasn’t walking this journey alone. And in that safe, supportive space, Mary found the strength to keep going.

We all need someone like Elizabeth in our lives.

Why Finding Your Elizabeth Matters

The truth is, not everyone can offer the kind of support you need during life’s tough seasons. Some people won’t understand your journey, while others might unintentionally make things harder. But the right person—the one who truly sees you—can remind you of your strength when you need it most. That’s why it is so important to have the right people in your life.

Think about this: Elizabeth’s words of encouragement and her belief in what was happening, gave Mary the confidence to embrace her calling. That’s the power of having someone in your corner.

For me, Nancy has been that person time and time again. Whether we’re crying with laughter or having a deep, real conversation, I always leave our talks feeling lighter and stronger. She creates a safe space for me to be myself, and that’s a gift I never take for granted. Together we have realized that having the ability to be ourselves without judgement is a soft place to land, especially in a world that’s so judgmental and cruel at times.

How to Find Your Elizabeth

If you’re in a tough season and looking for support, here’s where to start:

1. Look for shared experiences. Seek out people who are walking a similar path or who’ve e been where you are. A friend, mentor, or even a support group can make all the difference.

2. Be intentional about who you trust. Not everyone needs to know what you’re going through. Choose someone who listens without judgment and lifts you up.

3. Create moments to connect. Whether it’s a phone call, coffee, or a long walk, spend time with the people who make you feel safe and understood.

4. Be an Elizabeth for someone else. Relationships are a two-way street. Just as you need support, someone else might need yours.

A Safe Place Matters

Like Mary, sometimes we need to step away from the noise and opinions of the world to find a quiet, safe place. It’s okay to take your time, to move through life’s changes with a trusted person by your side, and to let someone pour encouragement into you.

Whether it’s a friend like Nancy or someone you’ve yet to meet, your Elizabeth is out there. And if you’re already lucky enough to have them, hold onto that connection, nurture it, and let them know how much they mean to you.

Life is better when we don’t do it alone. Find your Elizabeth. Be someone’s Elizabeth. And never underestimate the power of a safe place and a good friend. Cheers!
