So Long, Status Quo: The Courage to Let Go

We’ve all been there—holding on so tight to the things we care about or worry about that we start to think we have to fix it all. We convince ourselves that if we just try harder, control it better, or hold on tighter, everything will magically fall into place. Spoiler alert: it won’t.

Now, if you’re a Christian like I am, you know this is the perfect time to hand it over to God. Let’s be real—He can’t exactly work on something we’re clutching onto like it’s the last slice of pizza at a family dinner.

Nicole Nordeman’s song Brave captures this moment of stepping into the unknown so beautifully. She sings, “So long, status quo. I think I just let go. You make me wanna be brave.” It’s a powerful reminder that letting go isn’t about giving up—it’s about trusting that something better is on the other side of surrender.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve white-knuckled my way through life because, well, I’m a control freak. “I’ll pray harder,” I’d think. “I’ll believe harder.” Basically, I thought I could “will” my way through it like life is some kind of cosmic arm-wrestling match. Spoiler alert #2: I’ve done more damage to my own mental and emotional health trying to control things than I’d like to admit.

Sometimes, we hold on because it feels safer than stepping into the unknown. But safety isn’t always good. Staying in your comfort zone keeps you from the growth and possibilities waiting for you. Nicole’s lyrics hit me hard: “I’ve never known a fire that didn’t begin with a flame.” What if your decision to loosen your grip is the spark that ignites something extraordinary?

No risks mean no growth. And trust me, the world doesn’t need a meh version of you. It needs the extraordinary one. So, what if you let go? What if you loosened your grip on the toxic, draining things that are holding you back and reached out for the new, exciting, and healthy things waiting to lift you up? What if, instead of trying to control everything, you trusted that what’s meant for you won’t miss you?

Letting go isn’t about weakness—it’s about bravery. It’s about saying, “God, I trust you with this while I step into the person you’ve made me to be.” You don’t have to do it all. You just have to trust that He will.

What are you still holding onto that it’s time to release? Let go—and dare to be brave.

Until next time,
